The Michigan football team was not the state’s only big winner in November. Sports betting in Michigan reached a significant combined monthly milestone of half a billion dollars.
Michigan online sportsbooks put up big numbers, taking a record amount of sports bets and also generating record revenue for the month. Michiganders wagered $473.8 million online in November, up 2.2% from an October that featured five football weekends.
Combined with the $26.7 million in wagers placed at Detroit’s three casinos, Michiganders wagered at least $500.5 million in legal bets for the month. That number does not include retail sports betting at the state’s tribal casinos, which are not required to report monthly numbers.
Monthly revenue record smashed by Michigan sportsbooks
For their part, operators smashed the monthly revenue record, earning $58.8 million of combined retail and online revenue in November. The previous record was $35.2 million in March. Sportsbooks held 11.7% of the bets, also a monthly high since January’s online launch.
Without a doubt, the overall interest was helped by a monumental month for the Wolverines, who topped rival Ohio State on Nov. 27. But a busy sports calendar also contributed to the big numbers, which were released Thursday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

DraftKings took $126.3 million in bets, good for a 26.7% market share. FanDuel handled $115.2 million in sports bets (24.3% share), while BetMGM Sportsbook was third in the November race with $100.8 million in bets (21.3%).
Barstool Sportsbook was in fourth place for online sports betting handle at $41.3 million (8.7% share). Barstool was in third place for handle in January but has maintained a grip on fourth place in every month since, far behind the top three but well ahead of the rest of the 14-operator field.
However, Caesars Sportsbook appears poised to challenge for the fourth position, finishing fifth in November with $37.8 million in handle (8.0% share).
Michigan public coffers get more tax infusion
As for the tax haul, the state of Michigan generated $1.6 million in taxes from November online betting, while the city of Detroit netted $926,598.
For the year, Michigan online sportsbooks have paid $6.5 million in state taxes and $3.7 million to the city of Detroit. Combined with retail betting at the Detroit casinos in 2021, sports betting operators have paid $7.5 million in state taxes and $4.9 million in taxes to Detroit.
